We design and manufacture our own line of LED High Intensity Grow Lights. Not too many years ago LED grow lights were still in their infancy and everything on the market was over hyped junk. Then about a year ago we took a second look and decided the LED market had grown up enough to support a good LED grow light design.
Before designing our own grow lights we did a lot of market research – we bought and tested and then disassembled several competitor’s lights including the UFO hydroponics grow light. But we also looked at HID lighting like Hydrofarm and Sun Systems Lighting Kits.
And what we discovered inside competitor’s LED lights was shocking!
First, you need to realize that we only bought and looked at lights in our range of the market. And our light is designed to grow a single plant or multiple small plant in a 2′ X 2′ space. There are large commercial systems on the market that cost $2000 and up and I’m sure that most of these are quality products.
All of the LED grow lights we bought for less than $100 were junk, no exception. They were nothing more than strings of common LEDs with series resistors and in most cases the resistors consumed more than 20% of the power drawn by the light. I did not try them but I suspect that none of these lights would keep even a low light African Violet alive in a low light room.
What’s even more shocking is most lights we bought in the $100 – $600 range were no better! They were just larger versions of the same designs!
Two exceptions to this are UFO hydroponics grow light and Kessil LED grow light. These two are actually decent products. I won’t mention the junk models because mentioning their name does nothing but promote their brand name.
But what about HID Grow Lights?
Both of the HID lights we tested (Hydrofarm and Sun Systems) are quality products and the lights deliver exactly what they advertise. And if you plan to grow plants in a fairly large indoor space I would recommend either of them. Just remember that with HID lighting your plants need to stay at least 2′ from the light and you need to provide lots of ventilation. You really need to add a exhaust fan kit to the light to draw the excess heat outside. But if you plan on converting a closet or cabinet into a grow room or you plan on purchasing one of the grow tents that are for sale on-line, either of these lights will turn the small space into a oven.
What about Your Product?
Our Grow-Sun high intensity LED grow lights are designed for the small scale grower, someone who wants to grow tomato plants, peppers or orchids in a small indoor space.
Our Grow-Sun high intensity LED grow lights are also designed for starting seedlings for outdoor gardens. Because our lights run very cool you can place the light just inches from your seedlings with no risk of burning your plants.
We don’t claim to compete with the big guys and we don’t claim to be better than a 300 Watt HID Grow Light. We only claim to do what we do well!
